Process for Survey of Demand

Factors

  • Population size -- to be estimated/researched
  • Marketing budget -- to be decided by us
  • Number of seats in course -- to be decided by us
Everything else can be determined by the survey or calculated.

Survey

  • Goal: to determine the level of interest in this course offering
  • Survey parameters:
    • Calculate sample size (number of people we need to fill out the survey): _____

Post-survey calculation

For illustration purposes, we assume that we only market using posters.  Of course, marketing will be cheaper because we can use our mailing lists which is free to use, now that it has already been acquired.

Question: If we offer a course and we want to fill the seats, how much will it cost to market?

Example

  • Factors
    • Level of interest (calculated from survey): 40%
    • Number of seats in course: 50
    • Percentage of posters will be seen by target audience: 33%
    • Cost of a poster: 3000 VND
  • 50 seats / 40% interest = 125 posters must be seen
  • 125 posters seen / 33% = 375 posters must be bought
  • 375 posters * 3000 VND = VND 1.125 million = around $58

Question: If we offer a course and have a fixed marketing budget, how many seats should we reserve?

Example

  • Factors
    • Level of interest (calculated from survey): 40%
    • Marketing budget: $50
    • Percentage of posters will be seen by target audience: 33%
    • Cost of a poster: 3000 VND
  • $50 = 975,000 VND
    • 975,000 / 3000 VND = 325 posters can be bought
      • 325 * 33% = 103 posters would be seen
      • 103 posters seen * 40% = 41 sign-ups

Question: If we want to fill the seats and have a fixed marketing budget, what level of interest is enough to offer a course?

      Example

      • Factors
        • Number of seats in course: 50
        • Marketing budget: $50
        • Percentage of posters will be seen by target audience: 33%
        • Cost of a poster: 3000 VND
      • $50 = 975,000 VND
      • 975,000 / 3000 VND = 325 posters can be bought
      • 325 * 33% = 103 posters would be seen
      • 50 seats / 103 posters seen = 49% minimum level of interest
        • So if the survey shows [49% + 10% confidence interval = 59% level of interest], then we can be 95% confident that all 50 seats will be filled
